DVaAP- Unit 1: Composing Shots

Anybody can direct a picture once they know the fundamentals. Directing is not a mystery, it’s not an art. The main thing about directing is: photograph the people’s eyes.

How do we Capture a Moment?

Part 1

Choose a video:

Eight Hours in Brooklyn
Experience Zero Gravity
Letters to Haiti
Life in Haiti
Lost in Tokyo

Take the first two minutes, and list out the different camera shots used. Give an approximation of the time at that shot.

Part 2

Lets look at the next parts of a scene; camera movements.

Do a bit of research, then in your own words, define the following 7 basic camera movements:

  • Pan
  • Tilt
  • Zoom
  • Dolly
  • Truck
  • Pedestal

Can you list any others?
