The Jim Henson Company

You’ve already learned about how Disney revolutionized Animatronics a little while back and you’ve seen some of the large scale animatronics used by Stan Winston Studio.

The Jim Henson Company also uses a lot of animatronics in combination with their puppetry, and is involved in a lot of tv shows and commercials, beyond just the muppets. I’ve streamed together a few clips, and some of the behind the scenes from their work on “The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy”.

You can watch it here, or here.

Questions:
1. It is not unusual in modern movies for fictitious and imaginary creatures to be entirely computer generated. How does the Jim Henson company create the creatures found in “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy“?

2. How many people are needed to setup the suit for Marvin the Android?

3. The Vogons in the movie are able to express a range of facial emotions. How is this done?

4. What are some of the difficulties for the actors playing the roles of these fictional characters?
